Best Detangler Ingredients

Women Running Hands Through Healthy Long Blonde Hair

Not trying to be partial but…of course we feel the detangler featured in our Deep Hydration Conditioner is the most superior one on the market today. Great care was taken when choosing which detangler our conditioner would use when Aura Sensory was launched 8 years ago.

There were so many on the market, but there was one that stood out as being the consistent best in simple home-tests with the various offerings. We ended up going with it because it was really the best choice in overall results, combined with its safety profile.

But let’s explore what the various detangling agents are, what some of their complementary effects might be in addition to detangling the hair, and if there are any safety concerns or haircare concerns with any of them. Related: Vinegar Rinses - Benefits for Scalp and Hair

Behentrimonium Methosulfate

The name for this detangler can be confusing because it seems to contain a word that’s in one of the commonly avoided self-care ingredients, by people who are in the “know” about what’s supposedly good and bad for the hair. We’re talking about “sulfates”. This ingredient is not actually a sulfate or derived from sulfates though, it just happens to be the given chemical name for this detangler.

This detangler was chosen out of the plethora of options available today for several reasons. We’ll get into the top reasons in the interest of time. I used a LOT of conditioners and conditioning hair products back when I was starting to think about this business.

One of the products I had at the forefront of my mind that I wanted to offer, aside from shampoo, was a really REALLY great conditioner. I had tried some great conditioners, but I knew that I could study what makes a really good conditioner and then make one that was better than anything else I had tried. Plus I wanted to make it affordable!

Conditioners Really Make All the Difference

I just know how much of a difference a really great conditioner can make in the way your hair looks and feels every day. Shampoo is important too of course. But conditioner is really the catalyst to help create that flat, shiny surface after the hair is cleaned. It’s the last thing to touch your hair in the shower.

It makes your hair easier to comb or brush out. It freshens the hair, coats it in a protective and shine-enhancing layer, and really makes for a great hair day if done right. Conditioners make a huge difference in how your hair turns out, whether you blow it out or air dry.

Detangling and Why it Matters

The detangler aspect of these hair-softening ingredients is not something that is of small importance. You need to be able to glide a wide tooth comb or brush through your hair for several reasons. First, it makes it much easier to style and shape. Related: Can Infrequent Washing Lead to Hair Loss?

Second, tangles can lend themselves to hair breakage. If you have to tug at all to get your hair combed out, then you could be looking at introducing some breakage and compromising the integrity of the individual strands. Having to pull means that you are stretching the strands too much and putting pressure on them.

Protective Coating

Behentrimonium methosulfate offers not only second to none detangling capabilities, but it also immensely softens the hair’s surface. It is the only detangler I used where I felt like my hair instantly became more pliable, more refreshed, and not weighed down at all.

Some conditioning agents can soften and detangle, but they also may be too heavy, and can make the hair feel weighted down or heavy. Not this detangling superstar, oh no! It will soften, detangle, AND still leave you with weightless, bouncy and shiny hair to boot!

The protective coating it leaves really helps to keep the hair tamed and behaving for a few days between washes. So it has some pretty great staying power and helps to protect and soften the hair all while providing that wonderfully flat, shiny surface that’s a sure sign of a healthy head of hair.  Related: Remedies for Porous Hair
