Welcome to part III of our series on home-beauty care and spa quality treatments you can administer on yourself (and your loved ones) at home, for much less. We’re all looking for some small ways to save money on the things that seem like luxury, as we navigate through the inflation that has infiltrated so many areas of our lives. This is an ode to those that are thrifty but still want to have fun and take care of themselves without sacrificing their savings!

Facial Light Therapy at Home

Facial skin treatments that use various spectrums of light to help do everything for the skin from improving acne and melasma to increasing collagen production and reducing fine lines and wrinkles, can now be done in the comfort of your own home.

These light therapy treatments tend to be somewhat time consuming, so it really can save you not only tons of money on expensive treatments, but also precious time. Think of how much longer it would take in your schedule to go to three 20-minute treatments per week in some salon that you needed to drive to. Related: Facial Light Therapies: Are They Worth It?

Imagine just popping into a designated room or even the basement where you had your own light therapy device plugged in and could instantly get your own treatments without driving anywhere, and without the hassle of potentially waiting in the lobby to get your treatment.

This could save hours for you when it’s all said and done. Not only that, but hundreds of dollars. Especially considering the light bulbs in these devices often will last for tens or even hundreds of hours. There are three lights on the spectrum that people use for treating their skin.

Blue light works best for skin that is acne prone. It helps to target and eliminate acne-causing bacteria. It can be very effective against acne, and has no side effects like so many other acne treatments can have. Red light therapy is probably the most popular. Red light aims to help stimulate collagen production, even out skin tone and help encourage a more vibrant, supple complexion overall.

It also has benefits for improved hair growth. You may even notice some extra unwanted peach fuzz on your face when treating your skin with red light, it’s that effective in helping to encourage hair growth! The last and perhaps least well known in the spectrum is yellow light.

Yellow light is known best for helping to aid in the healing process. It also has applications for helping to heal and treat acne, and other skin conditions like psoriasis. Whatever your goal is with skin improvement, light therapy can be a very affordable self-administered treatment you can do at home.

Fat Cavitation

Most people have never heard of fat cavitation. This is another one where you would need to purchase a device, however these devices are fairly reasonable if they can do what they say they can do. Fat cavitation is basically like a nonsurgical method to help liquify and flush fat cells in a localized area, out of the body.

How would this even be possible? The theory behind the treatment is that you hold the device on the skin, using some sort of slipping agent like a conductive gel, and very slow glide it over the surface repeatedly in each area you would like to slim down. The device emits a frequency (think of it as a vibration) that supposedly scrambles fat cells at such a high speed, that they burst. When they burst, the theory is that as long as you perform some sort of high intensity activity for half hour immediately following treatment, the fat cells will be flushed out of your body through your lymph system, and eliminated permanently.

There are some people who swear by this process. If it works, it certainly would be a great, nonsurgical way to help reduce problem areas that don’t seem to respond well to diet and exercise!

Home Tanning Beds

Home tanning beds are controversial, however you cannot argue the power of how sunlight can make you feel after deprivation over the winter. Most dermatologists will tell you that a tanning bed is a big fat “no” when it comes to skin care, skin cancer prevention, and safe sun exposure.

There are others who might say that as long as you responsibly use a tanning bed, and know your skin’s limits, it may be ok to enjoy the benefits of getting limited UV exposure in the low sun months. This all depends on what you subscribe to really. Related: Are There Ways I Can Tan Safely?

However, if you can limit your time in a tanning bed, and ensure you never even come close to burning, it might be a good way to get that extra infusion of vitamin D in the winter months. Plus, let’s face it, tanning is pleasurable to some people.
