"Shrinkflation" in Your Beauty and Personal Care Products

"Shrinkflation" in Your Beauty and Personal Care Products

Apr 27th 2024

Zero Wasted Jar Natural Deodorant on Its Side on White BackgroundShrinkflation doesn’t just occur in packaged foods and things like paper products (has anyone else noticed that bargain paper plates are now tiny, or that cans of soup have shrunk by what looks like thirty percent?). It can also happen to your health and beauty products.

What is ‘shrinkflation’ anyway?

Shrinkflation is basically keeping an item around the same price, but shrinking the amount of product in the package. Some may even consider the replacement of expensive ingredients with cheaper ones to save on cost to be a form of shrinkflation.

This way, consumers think they’re still getting an item for about the same price, but they many times unknowingly are actually getting less of the actual product in the container, or may be getting a much lower quality product. Two examples in the world of food are canned soups and ice cream.

Cans of soup used to be up to several ounces more than the standard size they are found in today. Ice cream used to be sold in half gallon containers, not a standard container of ice cream weighs several ounces less.

It Happens in Consumer Beauty and Personal Care Products Too

You may see it in your beauty and self care products in things like toothpaste tubes shrinking, deodorant tubes that are designed to look bigger but that actually have false bottoms and don’t hold as much product (which is exactly why we package our deodorant balm in a jar instead of in a roll up tube).

Natural deodorants are often not conducive to roll up formats because they don’t contain the petroleum derived ingredients that are for a good consistency and easy application anyway. Our jar packaging format allows for precise application with either the free applicator pad, or my personally preferred method, fingertip application.

Zero Waste Products - Worth Looking In To

Fingertip application allows you to target the exact area of your underarm you want to coat with deodorant, and the jar container can literally be used to the last drop of product. It’s a truly zero waste solution, and we make sure to pack it as full of product as we can - no false bottoms or incompletely filled products here!

Shrinkflation can really erode the value you get out of your personal and beauty care products. It may feel like you’re getting a decent deal, but it’s important to look at the ‘net weight’ of any product in comparison with other products you’re interested in to truly gauge which offers the better value.

We Strive to Fill Our Products to the Very Top

There’s nothing more frustrating than getting a container of a product that you really love, and finding that it’s not even filled to the top with product. This may seem like a small annoyance, but it can really eat away at your spending power.

We fill all products that go into a container as full as we can without compromising potential spillage. Even our soaps get “topped off” with additional soap after they liquid has filled the mold. What results is a generously sized bath bar that lasts and provides value for your money.

We Know That Every Ounce Counts Right Now

As stated in our series of how to help save money and make your dollar stretch in these intense times of inflation, we know how important it is to our customers to get their money’s worth. That’s why we have maintained our commitment to giving you the freshest products in generous sizes that are heaped with value.

We’ve also tried to keep our prices fair, while also balancing the need to stay profitable. After all, we are still a business and do need to be profitable in order to keep operating. Price increases are the last thing we want to do, and we have committed to only raising prices when it’s absolutely warranted. Offering the highest value for the best possible product still remains our #1 mission and commitment to you. Related: Our Mission Statement
